DJ Ossewa

Friday night I was talked into going to the Molfees - Afrikaans music festival in Malmesbury. Strangely enough the main act was The Parlotones, not bad. They skip Rocking the Daisies only to pitch up at "Die Molfees"?
The rest of the show hovered between mediocre and ugly (I'm being polite), with the exception of DJ Ossewa who had more presence and energy than the rest of the show combined. Click on an image to see it bigger.

R.I.P. Alex van Heerden 1974 - 2009

Memorial service at Solms-delta in Franschoek for Alex van heerden
South African trumpeter, vocalist, accordionist, producer, composer, historian and explorer. original frontier rogue.

"I found a musical tradition that was my own, but had been concealed to me. The rhythm of the 'Vastrap'. It is a music that is impossible to play if you don't believe in magic. Me and my accordion travelled across the Karoo, Overberg, Namaqualand. I drove, took buses, hitch-hiked, waiting for and finding synchronous meetings with musicians and other sorcerers" - Alex van Heerden
